FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why the name LUNA?
Gabriela Riveros, a LUNA founder, remembered a Spanish teacher in highschool who tried to get her to join an after school club called LUNA, Latinos Unidos en las Artes. She wasn't impressed by it, the Spanish teacher (who was not Latina) didn't have much of an itinerary for the club other than serving students latin foods and putting on generic dancing costumes. But, the clever name stuck with her years later. As a fresh college graduate, Gabriela met Katie, LUNA's other co-founder, while working for an arts & education non-profit. When they both came up with the idea to gather other Latinx artists in Milwaukee and make something of it, Gabriela thought of the name belonging to that after school club right away. It fit perfectly, a collective of artists named after the moon, a symbol of feminine energy and connection, while also spelling out exactly what the group is: Latinas Unidas en las Artes.
