Leaders that we love
July 26h, 2019
Pre-pandemic, Milwaukee had a dream to host the Democratic National Convention and LUNA dreamed that we’d get to meet AOC. While COVID-19 had other plans, we very much appreciated and respected our national leaders choosing to stay home to keep themselves and everyone safe.
The DNC moved mostly to a virtual space, so we decided to follow suit and celebrate both the national and local leaders that we love! Using our social media platforms on Instagram and Facebook we highlighted visual art and photography of some of our favorite leaders.
An exciting project that developed through this show spearheaded by Jess Ayala and assisted by Mireya Mercado was a photoshoot of some incredible Milwaukee leaders. This photo series included: Dr. Monique Liston, founder of Ubuntu Research and Education; Dana Smith AKA Ms. Lotus Fankh, musician, writer, activist and co-organizer of Black WMNZ Emancipation March; District 5 Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd; Nailah Johnson musician and former Cultural Organizer at Leaders Igniting Transformation; Drea Rodriguez, educator and community organizer; Gabriella Marquez a field organizer with the Democratic Party of Wisconsin's Milwaukee Area; Constance Crockett and Sasha Leona Wojcik organizers of the Black WMNZ Emancipation March and the Juneteenth Block Party; JoAnna Bautch a Latinx, LGBTQ+ leader, Movement Politics Director at Citizen Action of Wisconsin; Destiny Monae and Becca Burrell, activists and core organizers of The People's Revolution; Mireya Mercado, Digital and Messaging Coordinator at Citizen Action of Wisconsin; and Dora Drake, politician and community advocate who represents the 11th assembly district in the Wisconsin State Assembly.
